WASHINGTON – The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace announced today the appointment of Christian Brose as a senior fellow. Brose’s work will focus on U.S. defense policy, strategy, and programs, especially the implications of technological advances and evolving security threats for the U.S. military.

“Emerging technologies and the way other states are deploying them are fundamentally challenging the American military enterprise and calling into question the critical assumptions on which it was conceived and built,” said Brose. “I am delighted to join Carnegie to lead an initiative to examine what it will take for the United States to transition from the military we have today to the military we need for tomorrow. I could not ask for a better group of colleagues and look forward to benefitting from their wisdom and experience. I am excited to work together to advance Carnegie’s efforts to think strategically about the intersection of technology, policy, and international affairs.”

“Chris embodies the best of the next generation of policy thinkers and practitioners,” said Carnegie President William J. Burns. “He is incredibly thoughtful, eloquent, and independent-minded—qualities I admired immediately when I first met him almost two decades ago as a speechwriter at the State Department and qualities which have won him the trust and respect of Senator McCain and so many others.”

Prior to joining Carnegie, Brose served as staff director of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, where he managed the committee’s oversight of the national defense program and the production of four National Defense Authorization Acts that passed with large bipartisan majorities. During his tenure, the committee conceived and delivered landmark reforms to defense strategy, personnel, procurement, and technology policy. From 2009 to 2014, he served as a senior policy adviser to former senator John McCain (R-AZ), supporting his leadership of the committee and his work on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

During the George W. Bush administration, Brose served as speechwriter to secretary of state Colin Powell and later as policy adviser and chief speechwriter to secretary of state Condoleezza Rice. He was a senior editor at Foreign Policy from 2008 to 2009.

Since December 2018, Brose has served as head of strategy at Anduril Industries. He is also working on a book for Hachette about the impact of emerging technologies on the future of warfare.
