Mr. Abdujabar Abduvakhitov

Abdujabar Abduvákhitov is a leading expert on Islamic political movements and most recently coauthored an encyclopedia on international terrorism and extremism, published in Uzbekistan. He will be a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment through June 2002. He is head of the international relations department of Uzbekistan's Academy of State and Social Construction. There, he teaches courses on politics in the Middle East and Asia, Islamic political movements, and history of international affairs.

Earlier, he was executive director and vice chairman of the board of the Ustoz Republican Foundation in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, which focuses on international teacher training for Uzbekistan colleges and universities.

He has held various academic positions in Uzbekistan and the United States. In Uzbekistan, he was general director at Academy Meros, scientific secretary at the Institute of Oriental Studies in the Academy of Science, and assistant lecturer of political science at the Oriental Institute of Tashkent Higher Political School. In the United States, he has been a visiting scholar at University of Maryland and Columbia University. He has published extensively in Uzbekistan and Russia and in the United States.
